Deloitte's WA university-merger analysis: citation errors and a benefit-cost claim its own summary contradicts
What the AI said
The report repeatedly claimed that merging UWA, Curtin and Murdoch offered the 'largest benefit-cost ratio' of the options, and it contained citation errors that critics called AI-generated.
What was actually true
WA's shadow education minister said the report's own summary showed the claim was 'simply wrong'. Deloitte acknowledged 'minor referencing errors' in the 219-page document.
Cost or impact
Fee of about A$166,000 (AFR). Minister Tony Buti said Deloitte was ordered to 'go back, look at the data and reissue another report'. A partial refund is sought; the opposition wants a full one. Still developing.
Who caught it
Reddit users including 'RareGuidance312', and shadow minister Liam Staltari.
